Western Primary School Newsletter No 10
Friday 8th May 2009
Dear Parents/Carers
Swine Flu
I hope you and your family are keeping well. Please find an information leaflet about swine flu attached to this newsletter. All schools have had regular updates from the DCSF and from Hampshire County Council. If your child is feeling poorly or they have a temperature and are unable to cope with a day at school, please keep them at home. However, if they only have a cold and a sniffle and they are not feeling too poorly, please send them to school.
May I remind you that children should not return to school until 24 hours after the last bout of vomiting or diarrhoea as this hopefully ensures that your child has fully recovered and reduces the risk of passing on any bugs.
If we receive any further advice about swine flu, I will contact you as soon as possible.
Staffing in September
We are delighted that Mrs Thomas has returned from maternity leave. She is currently teaching Year 3 alongside Mr Silvester. From September, Mrs Thomas will be teaching Year 5 alongside Mrs Henderson.
Mrs Henderson is making a phased return to work and we are pleased to welcome her back after her ordeal.
We have appointed Miss Hannah Sullivan to join Western as teacher in Year 3 from September. She will make several visits in the summer term to meet the children and liaise with staff.
Strategic Planning Meeting - 5 May
Thank you to those who attended the meeting on Tuesday. If you were unable to attend but would like to contribute to the future development of Western, please return the questionnaire by Monday 11th May.
If you missed this letter or have mislaid it, please call into school to collect a form.
Breakfast Club
Breakfast Club is now up and running. If you need to get off to work early, why not bring your child to school at 8.00am? They can enjoy a nutritious breakfast, consisting of a choice of breakfast cereals, yoghurts, toast, fruit and fruit juice. After breakfast, there will be time for the children to play quiet games and have fun with their friends. All this for just £4.00 per morning.
If you need more information, please ask at the office for an information pack. Alternatively, you can ask Miss Holding who works in Year 5.
After School Clubs
Planet Sport - Tuesdays
Planet Sport need a minimum of 10 children to continue the multi-sport sessions after school. If you are interested, please contact Myke Smith on 02380 246944.
French Club - Mondays, Tuesdays and
Thursdays
There are spaces available for French Club on all three afternoons. If you are interested, or want to find out more, please contact Mrs Duffield on 856660.
Walk to School Week 18th - 22nd May
Western is again participating in this annual event. Please find attached a letter about Walk to School Week and a record card for your child to use.
Cycling to School and Cycle Instructor Training
Hampshires policy regarding cycling is that children should do a Cycling Proficiency course in Year 6 in order to cycle to school on their own when at secondary school.
Children younger than 11 are not able to judge speed and distance of vehicles very well and so it is not recommended that they cycle to school on their own. If you wish to consider the school policy on children, younger than 11, cycling with parents and leaving the childs bike at school (we would need to invest in a bike shed), you could include this as a suggestion on the Strategic Planning questionnaire.
Training dates for volunteers to train as a cycle instructor are:-
Wednesday 13th May
Thursday 21st May
Tuesday 2nd June
Volunteers only have to attend one session which is held in Winchester between
6.45-9.15pm. Nomination forms can be obtained from the school office. An instructor can coach 5 pupils so the more instructors we have, the more Year 6 pupils can be trained.
Triple P Parenting Course
Following the success of the Triple P Parenting course held in the spring term, we have had a number of enquiries about a future course. We are anticipating running another course early in the autumn term. I would be grateful if you would indicate your interest by completing and returning the pro forma below so that I can start making the arrangements.
Information about extended schools provision can be found at www.morethanschools.org.uk
Use of the school field after school
We are very fortunate to have such fantastic grounds at Western and I know that many of you stay so that the children can enjoy them after school.
If you do take advantage of the grounds, please remember that children should be supervised at all times. Children should not go out of bounds (in order to keep them safe), climb trees or play in such a way to hurt or upset other children.
Thank you for your support.
Foneclub
Just a reminder that the PTA has joined this organisation on a mobile phone recycling initiative. The foneclub will pay the PTA £2.50 for every phone regardless of age or condition. Just pop your unwanted phone (without SIM card) into the PTA tin near the school office.
