Western Primary School Newsletter No 13
18th July 2008
Dear Parents/Carers
It has been an action packed end to the term! Apologies for not writing earlier.
PTA Summer Fair
Congratulations to the PTA for organising such a super event. Excellent teamwork before, during and after the event ensured that the children, parents and staff had a marvellous time.
The PTA’s fundraising efforts this year have enabled us to purchase interactive whiteboards for Year 3. These will be installed in the summer holidays. Other purchases have included music equipment, a CD recorder, a PA system, radio microphones, speakers for laptops and library books.
Year R/Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Sports Days
There were exciting team events this year. It was great to see all the children so involved throughout the afternoon, displaying an excellent team spirit. Year 6, in particular, were great ambassadors on both occasions. Thanks to Mrs Garner for organising the Year R/KS1 event and to Mrs Gorman for co-ordinating the KS2 event.
Summer Concerts
Everyone who attended the concerts was treated to two evenings of musical entertainment of a very high quality. They were a showcase for children who have been learning to play an instrument or who have been singing in one of the school’s three choirs. Thanks to all the staff who teach the children – staff from Hampshire Music Service, Mrs McElroy, Miss Bailey and Mrs Henderson and to parents and volunteers who come in to support the children. The children’s enthusiasm and commitment shone through during their performances. Thanks to Mrs Henderson for all that she does to ensure music has a high profile in school and that so many children enjoy their musical experiences.
Rounders Tournament
Well done to the two Year 6 Rounders Teams – they came first and second in a Rounders Tournament held at The Westgate earlier this term.
Year 4 visit to the Hat Fair
Congratulations to Year 4 for winning the Purse Plate for Best Presentation. More importantly, they were congratulated by the judges for their impeccable behaviour all day.
Year 6 Production of ‘The Pied Piper’
Congratulations to the Year 6 pupils for their superb performance of ‘The Pied Piper’. It was a fun, ensemble performance and hopefully it will provide another happy memory of the children’s time at Western.
Thank you for your generous donations following the concerts. This money will go towards enrichment activities in the Arts eg. Arts Week, Book Day etc..
Year 6 Children
It has been a busy, productive and successful year for the Year 6 children. They have taken on additional responsibilities this year with a smile and have shown commitment to all aspects of school life. They have made pleasing progress and are ready to go forward with confidence and make the most of the opportunities on offer at their new schools.
On behalf of all the staff, may I wish you all the very best for next year. We look forward to hearing of your successes and achievements in the future.

Thank you
The Non-Uniform Day in aid of St Paul’s Roof Appeal raised £402.72. Peter Seal is delighted and has asked me to say thank you to everyone who supported this, and the Community Event.
Charity Fund Raising
World Wildlife Fund – Noah Harrison, Alexander Wallace, Fergus Marsden, Oliver Brown, Hugh Warden and Reuben Lloyd have been very enterprising in support of the orang-outangs who are facing extinction. The cake sale and sponsored bike ride they organised raised £310.00. Very well done indeed!
The DEC collection to support the recent earthquake and cyclone victims raised £100.00. Thank you to all the children who contributed from their own pocket money.
Looking Forward to Next Year
Thank you for your support regarding school uniform. Please find attached a full list of the school’s uniform as a reminder.
Also attached is a list of the school vacation dates.
We are all looking forward to the refurbishment of the Years1/3 and Years 2/4 toilets, the cloakrooms and the staff room which will take place over the summer holidays.
We have an INSET day on Wednesday 3rd September; school reopens for children on Thursday 4th September. A second INSET day has been arranged for Friday 24th October. I will inform you of the other INSET days as soon as they have been agreed.
May I take this opportunity to wish you and your family a happy and relaxing summer holiday.
Yours sincerely
Lorraine Smith
